Zanzibar Trip Cost: Build a Realistic Budget

Your Zanzibar trip cost depends on the flights, accommodation, meal plan and activities you choose. The most reliable budget is an itemised quote for your dates, not a universal daily average. Use the worksheet below to compare options without overlooking transfers, entry arrangements or time away from an all-inclusive hotel.

Build the budget in separate parts

Start with international flights and accommodation. Record whether the hotel price is per room or per person and whether it includes meals. Then add airport transfers, any hotel moves, excursions and the costs attached to your entry requirements. Keep a separate contingency amount that you decide yourself.

  • Flights: fare, baggage and change conditions.
  • Hotel: nights, room occupancy, meal plan and separately payable charges.
  • Transport: airport transfers, hotel moves and excursion pickups.
  • Activities: private or shared service, entry fees, equipment and meals.
  • Documents: visa where required and applicable insurance.

Check the documented entry charges

Tanzania Immigration lists an ordinary tourist visa fee of USD 50 for eligible applicants and USD 100 for a multiple-entry visa. Nationality and purpose determine the appropriate category; do not assume every traveller needs the same visa. Check the official portal before budgeting or paying.

For insurance, use the current official purchase channel for your first point of entry. Keep this separate from your own travel insurance. Read our entry guide for the distinction between arriving first in Zanzibar and first on the mainland.

Compare excursions on the same basis

A low advertised figure may refer to a shared departure or exclude hotel pickup. Ask for the total for your party and an inclusion list. Confirm whether guide services, entry fees, lunch and equipment are included. Check whether a private vehicle also means a private boat, or whether the services are mixed.

For a safari, add internal flights and overnight arrangements explicitly. A beach excursion budget cannot be used as a reliable proxy for a mainland wildlife trip.

Use a simple quote worksheet

Write down each supplier’s amount, currency, due date and cancellation condition. Convert all offers using the same exchange-rate date if you want a comparison in your home currency. Keep the original amounts alongside the conversion, since exchange rates and payment-provider fees can change.

For example, compare a breakfast-only hotel plus the meals you expect to buy with the extra cost of all-inclusive. This is a calculation using your quotes, not an assumption that one meal plan always saves money.

Ask for a usable final total

Send your hotel names, dates, party size and preferred activities when requesting a quote. Ask the operator to separate optional extras. Avoid committing to a crowded itinerary merely to make a package look like better value: an activity you do not want is still an expense.

FAQs

How much does a week in Zanzibar cost?

There is no single reliable total. Add quotes for your flights, room, meal plan, transfers, entry requirements and chosen excursions for the exact dates.

Should I budget in dollars or my home currency?

Keep supplier quotes in their original currencies and make a dated home-currency comparison. Confirm the payment currency and any provider fees.
