All-inclusive in Zanzibar is worth considering if you expect to eat and spend most of your time at the hotel. If you plan frequent day trips and meals elsewhere, breakfast-only or half-board may fit better. Compare the actual upgrade price with the meals and drinks you expect to use.
Start with your itinerary, not the package label
Count how many lunches and dinners you realistically expect to have at the property. Include arrival and departure times, boat excursions and any Stone Town outing. A full-day excursion with lunch can reduce the value you get from a prepaid hotel meal on that day.
Also consider convenience. Knowing where the family will eat can be valuable even when the calculation does not show a large saving. The right answer depends on how you want the holiday to feel as well as the price.
Read exactly what is included
Ask which restaurants, drinks and serving times the plan covers. Check whether special dinners, room service, premium drinks or meals on departure day cost extra. Confirm the rules for children and whether the plan begins at check-in or at a specific meal.
A hotel meal plan does not establish that flights, airport transfers, boat trips or entry arrangements are included. Those need to appear separately in the booking confirmation.
Use a break-even calculation
Take the quoted cost of the meal-plan upgrade for your whole party. Compare it with your own estimate for the meals and drinks you would otherwise buy at that hotel. Use the hotel’s current menu or a written estimate, not a generic island-wide price list.
Then subtract the meals you expect to miss while exploring. If you would still choose all-inclusive for convenience, that is a valid preference; the calculation simply makes the trade-off visible.
Check restaurants outside the property
Before choosing a smaller meal plan, find out whether nearby restaurants are accessible on foot and what transport you will need after dinner. The location of the hotel entrance and the usable walking route matter. A place described as near a village may still require a taxi.
If trying local food is part of the reason for your trip, protect time for it. A market walk or spice outing can complement a resort stay without requiring you to eat every meal away from the hotel.
Ask about flexibility
Confirm whether you can upgrade later, whether everyone in the room must use the same plan and whether dietary needs can be accommodated. Keep the written inclusion list with your booking. Compare the same room category and cancellation terms before concluding that a package is better value.

FAQs
Are excursions included in all-inclusive?
Only if the booking explicitly includes them. A meal plan usually describes hotel food and drink; confirm every activity and transfer separately.
Is breakfast-only a good option in Zanzibar?
It can be if you want to explore and have practical access to restaurants. Check the hotel’s location and current food prices first.
