Zanzibar with Kids: A Practical Family Guide

Zanzibar with kids is easier when you use one beach base, keep arrival day light and select activities around your children’s ages and confidence. Check the specific hotel, boat and transfer arrangements before booking; a destination described as family-friendly does not guarantee suitable equipment or supervision.
Start with the room and daily routine
Confirm sleeping arrangements, stair access, balcony protection and whether a pool is supervised. Ask about shade and the route between the room, restaurant and beach. For young children, a comfortable place for an afternoon rest can matter more than a long list of facilities.
Choose a meal plan around the times your family actually eats. Check whether early meals, simple alternatives and drinking water are available, rather than assuming a buffet will meet every need.
Make transfers manageable
Give the operator your children’s ages and request the appropriate child seats before accepting the quote. Confirm the seats and vehicle in writing. Keep water, a change of clothes and essential items with you rather than buried in luggage. Avoid scheduling a demanding outing straight after the international flight.
Ask specific questions about boat trips
Ask whether correctly sized lifejackets are available, how boarding works, how long the boat journey takes and whether there is shade. Explain if a child cannot swim or is anxious on open water. A snorkelling excursion should allow a parent to remain with a child rather than assuming everyone enters the water together.
Sea conditions can change. Agree what happens if the trip is postponed and leave room in the itinerary to move it. A land-based outing is a useful alternative.
Choose shorter cultural and nature outings
Consider a shorter Stone Town walk with breaks, or a spice visit that leaves time for questions. At wildlife sites, follow the guide’s instructions and keep children from feeding or touching animals. Combine stops only when the road time and energy required make sense for your family.
Prepare for health needs before departure
Discuss your itinerary and your children’s needs with a qualified travel-health professional. The FCDO health page identifies destination risks and links to specialist advice. Carry prescribed medicines and relevant documentation, and confirm how to contact your insurer. This guide cannot determine which precautions are appropriate for an individual child.
Leave space in the plan
Treat a successful beach morning or a relaxed meal as part of the holiday, not time that needs another booking. For a first visit, Stone Town plus one beach base is a practical starting point. Add excursions once you know what your family enjoys.
Plan your next step
- Adapt a seven-day itinerary
- Check entry arrangements
- See the spice-farm visit

FAQs
Is Zanzibar suitable for a family holiday?
It can be, with suitable accommodation and a plan matched to the children. Check medical advice, swimming conditions and equipment before deciding.
Do children need their own visa application?
Tanzania Immigration says each passport holder requires a separate application where a visa is required. Check the current rules for every child’s nationality.
